Strategic Plan Update

The Ellwood House Museum was established as a way to share the story of the Ellwood family, and the ingenuity and importance of barbed wire. Since 1965 the museum has offered tours of the historic home, provided a space for programs, exhibits and events that engage the community, and has served as a campus for the public to enjoy. Our staff, volunteers and the DeKalb Park District have dedicated themselves to preserving the collection, home, and ground for future generations to enjoy. As each new day comes, we must take time to examine our past and where our future lies.

Our last Strategic Plan came to a conclusion in 2021. Since stepping into the Executive Director role in 2022, I’ve taken my time to learn and familiarize myself with the organization, our campus and our community. As we enter 2025 the Board of Directors and myself have been hard at work developing our vision for the future. This comprehensive plan focuses on shaping the future of the museum while staying true to our mission, vision, and values.

Mission

The mission of the Ellwood House Association is to engage visitors with authentic examples of ingenuity and architecture by sharing the Ellwood mansion, gardens, and museum campus.

Vision

Our vision is for a dynamic museum campus, deeply rooted in our community, providing connections between the past and today, inspiring creativity, and sharing a sense of wonder.

Four themes were identified as a foundation for developing the updated Strategic Plan while remaining grounded in our mission.
